How to Change Facebook to Dark Mode

What to Know

  • On Facebook.com: Select the down-arrow, choose Display Preferences, then turn on Dark Mode.
  • iOS and Android: Tap the menu icon in the upper or lower-right corner, then select Settings & Privacy > Dark Mode > On.

This article explains how to enable Dark Mode on the Facebook website, the Facebook app for iOS and Android, Google Chrome, and other Chromium-based browsers.

How to Get Dark Mode on the Facebook Website

Dark Mode on Facebook flips the white-and-blue color scheme to a dark gray background with white text. Dark Mode creates a darker screen that reduces eye strain (and saves battery life). Here’s how to turn it on from a browser:

  1. Open the Facebook website and log in.

  2. Click the down-arrow in the upper-right corner.

  4. Under Preferences, tap Dark Mode.

  5. You have three options for Dark Mode: On, Off, and System. The first two choices affect Facebook’s Dark Mode setting independently of which mode your iPhone uses globally. The System setting matches your iPhone; that is, turning on Dark Mode for your iPhone will also activate it for Facebook.

How to Force Facebook Dark Mode in Chrome

If you don’t have access to Dark Mode on Facebook, there is a workaround if you use a Chromium-based web browser like Google Chrome or Brave.

Turning on Dark Mode in Chrome forces Dark Mode to switch on for other websites, so only use it if you’re looking for the full Dark Mode experience on the internet.

This method works on Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers like Edge and Brave, and it works on any platform where you can use those browsers.

To force Dark Mode in Chrome:

  1. Open Chrome, or any Chromium-based browser, and go to chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark.

  2. Select Enabled from the drop-down menu next to Force Dark Mode for Web Contents.

  3. Select Relaunch in the lower-right corner.

Relaunching closes and restarts Chrome. If you’re working on anything in another Chrome tab, save and close it before you click Relaunch.

  4. Facebook and other sites display in Dark Mode. Even though Dark Mode is off, Facebook still appears in Dark Mode.
